Frequently asked questions
- What is 350°F in Celsius?
- 350°F is about 177°C, which most recipes round to 175°C or 180°C. It is also gas mark 4. This is the most common baking temperature in American recipes, which is why it is worth memorising: 350°F, 180°C, gas 4 all mean roughly the same moderate oven.
- How do I convert a recipe for a fan oven?
- Lower the temperature by about 20°C compared with a conventional oven setting, and check the food a little early. A fan circulates hot air, so it browns and cooks faster at the same dial setting. So a conventional 180°C becomes about 160°C fan. The converter shows the fan equivalent automatically.
- What are gas marks?
- Gas marks are the numbered settings on a gas oven, running from 1/4 up to 9. Each step is roughly 14°C apart. Gas mark 4 is 180°C, gas mark 6 is 200°C, and gas mark 9 is 240°C. They are common in older UK recipes and on gas ovens that do not show a temperature.
- Does this work offline and is anything sent to a server?
- The calculation runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere, and once the page has loaded it keeps working with no connection. There is no sign-up and no limit on how many conversions you make.
