The quick answer: 350°F is 177°C, or gas mark 4, the moderate oven most baking uses. The oven temperature converter turns any temperature into Fahrenheit, Celsius, gas mark and the fan-oven setting at once, and the chart below covers the common points.

The Celsius figures are rounded to the values printed on oven dials, so 350°F shows as 180°C here even though the exact conversion is 177°C.

Converting Fahrenheit and Celsius

The exact relationship is a straight formula. To go from Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 and multiply by five-ninths. To go the other way, multiply by nine-fifths and add 32. For a rough mental version, double the Celsius and add 30 to estimate Fahrenheit. The oven temperature converter does the exact maths and rounds it to a sensible dial setting.

The fan-oven rule

A fan, or convection, oven moves hot air around the food, so it cooks faster and browns more at the same dial setting. The common rule is to set a fan oven about 20°C lower than a conventional recipe calls for. So a recipe written for 180°C conventional becomes about 160°C fan. Recipes are usually written for conventional ovens unless they say otherwise, so lower the temperature if yours has a fan and check the food a few minutes early.

Gas marks

Gas marks are the numbered settings on gas ovens, running from a quarter up to nine. Each step is roughly 14°C, so the scale is even. Gas mark 4 at 180°C is the baking workhorse, gas mark 6 at 200°C is for roasting, and gas mark 1 at 140°C is for slow cooking.

Frequently asked questions

What is 350°F in Celsius?
350°F is about 177°C, which most recipes round to 175°C or 180°C. It is also gas mark 4. This is the most common baking temperature in American recipes, so it is worth remembering that 350°F, 180°C and gas mark 4 all mean roughly the same moderate oven.
How do I convert a recipe for a fan oven?
Lower the temperature by about 20°C compared with the conventional setting, and check the food a little early. A fan circulates hot air, so it cooks and browns faster at the same dial number. A conventional 180°C becomes about 160°C fan. The oven temperature converter shows the fan figure for you.
What is gas mark 4 in Celsius and Fahrenheit?
Gas mark 4 is 180°C, or about 350°F. Each gas mark is roughly 14°C apart, so gas mark 6 is 200°C and gas mark 9 is 240°C. Gas marks appear on older UK recipes and on gas ovens that show numbers instead of a temperature.
